Buntáiste Breise na Gaeilge – 2011 Tour

May 18, 2011

Once again this year Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge will host a series of irish language career option seminars all over Ireland.   In the coming months similar seminars will take place in in Carrick-on-Shannon, Carickmacross, Limerick and Co. Waterford.

Up until now Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge have organised many of these seminars all over the country.  To date, An Chomhdháil has held these seminars in Killarney, Dublin, Galway, Cork, Castlebar, Belfast, Letterkenny and Tullamore.

These seminars cater for secondary level students all over Ireland.   ‘The Added Advantage of Irish’ is the theme of the seminar, and guest speakers and well-known personalities will speak on the advantages which the Irish language has afforded them in their chosen careers.

As part of the seminars, questions from the students are welcomed, which give rise to lively debate about such subjects as the future of the language, Gaeltacht status, Irish as a compulsory subject, Irish at third level, and the Government’s support for the language.

Representatives from third level institutions attend with exhibition stands, to inform students of the various Irish language courses available to them after they leave school.

These seminars which have been organised since 2009 have proven to be a great success with over 78 secondary school schools and up to 2,500 students all over the Ireland attending.

If you are a secondary school teacher or an individual who would like to attend any of the upcoming seminars listed below which may be taking place in your region please contact Brígíd Ní Ghríofa in Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, 01 679 4780.

Young writers take part in Scríobh Leabhar project

May 16, 2011

Nine schools were recognised recently for taking part in this year’s Scríobh Leabhar project, which is organised by Foras na Gaeilge.

The primary school pupils have taken not so baby steps on the way to becoming the seanchaí of the future by having their very own stories not only told but published in Irish. Students composed, designed and published their own books in Irish and were recognised for their endeavours at a presentation on April 12 in the Mayo Education Centre. Bridget Breathnach, author of Lúlú agus an Oíche Ghlórach, presented the students with their awards. Locally, the ‘Scríobh Leabhar’ scheme is managed by the Mayo Education Centre in conjunction with Foras na Gaeilge.

The schools recognised by Foras na Gaeilge and the Mayo Education Centre at the ceremony were Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Seosamh, Bun an Chorraigh, Acaill; Scoil Náisiúnta Corrchloch, Corrchloch, Béal an Mhuirthead; Scoil Náisiúnta, Carn, Béal an Átha; Scoil Náisiúnta, Dhú Thuama, Béal an Átha; Scoil Náisiúnta An Fhairche, Co na Gaillimhe; Scoil Raifteirí, Caisleán an Bharraigh; Scoil Náisiúnta Pholl an tSómais, Poll an tSómais; Scoil Mhuire, Corr na Móna, Co na Gaillimhe; and Scoil Náisiúnta Killocraun, Béal an Átha.
