Funding for Naiscoil an Creagain from Education Minister – O’Muirí
July 11, 2014
Sinn Féin’s local Irish language spokesperson Barra O’Muirí has said that Education Minister John O’Dowd’s decision to provide interim funding to Altram has provided stability and security for Naiscoil an Creagain.
Speaking following the announcement that Altram, which funds Irish Medium pre-school provision across the north, will receive funding from the Department of Education Councillor Ó Muirí said, “Altram will experience a short-fall in their funding following the changes being brought in by Foras na Gaeilge as a result of an North South Ministerial Council decision made last year.
“This had a knock on effect on our local Irish Medium Pre School facility – Naiscoil an Creagain as there were concerns that services would have to be cut due to lack of funding.
“However John O’Dowd’s announcement has meant that the Naiscoil will not loose any fudning and services will be maintained. This is wonderful news and a sensible decision from the Minister.
He added, “I am delighted, knowing the excellent work that Naiscoil an Cresgain are doing and I think that this news, coupled with the £14.5 Million investment in a new second level school in Crossmaglen demonstrates Sinn Féin’s ongoing commitment to education in South Armagh.”

ARTISTS of any genre who are interested in being considered for a “Per Cent Art Project” at Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin, Cloch na gCoillte, Iarthair Chorcaí (Clonakilty), are invited to submit an expression of interest to the Bórd Bainistíochta before 25th July.
All expressions must be made via e-mail to iarratasai@gmail.com
It is envisaged that the Board of Management will meet with those who email and relevant issues will be discussed at that stage, after which the interested artists will be invited to submit their proposals.
The “Per Cent for Art” scheme is a government initiative, first introduced in 1988, whereby 1% of the cost of any publicly funded capital, infrastructural and building development can be allocated to the commissioning of a work of art.
Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin is a completely new building which opened in August 2013.
Principal Ms Carmel Nic Airt said, “West Cork and indeed the whole of Ireland is full of creative people in diverse disciplines. We welcome expressions of interest from Artists, Musicians, Writers, Film-makers, Dance Artists, Drama Practitioners, etc. to create something unique and relevant to our school, it’s history, function and place in the world.
“This is an exciting project and we look forward to hearing from creators of art in all it’s guises over the coming few weeks”.

Intensive Irish Course for Post-Primary Teachers Working in Gaeltacht and Irish-Medium Schools
July 9, 2014
August 18-22nd, Coláiste de hÍde, Tallaght, Dublin 24
The course will focus on the kind of language used by teachers on a daily basis when engaging with pupils in the classroom and in the school environment, as well as with other teachers and with parents.
The communicative approach to teaching will be used in the classes. A strong emphasis will be placed on group and pair work, giving learners a chance to practise what they’ve been taught.
A specialised session focusing on the teachers’ main subjects (excluding languages) will be offered. Every effort will be made to cater for the second subject but this might not be possible in all cases.
Emphasis will be placed on the most important and useful aspects of Irish grammar, e.g. verb tenses, simple prepositions, prepositional pronouns, gender of nouns/cases, counting people and things, dates and ordinal numbers, and the imperative mood. Games and competitions will be used to make the learning process more enjoyable and effective.
The following material will be covered in the classes regarding Irish and Information Technology: – adapting a computer for Irish – setting up Microsoft Word for Irish – the spellchecker GaelSpell – web resources, e.g. online Irish dictionaries, databases, and journals – resources for young and adult learners
Gramadach gan Stró! and Gaeilge gan Stró! – Lower Intermediate Level will be used as textbooks throughout the course and accounts will be created on the e-learning site ranganna.com for the participants.
