Gael Taca are organising a bilingual BBQ in the Bower Bar at 7pm on Friday, 19th of July 2013. After the BBQ Gradam Phádraig Uí Chuanacháin an Irish Language In Business Award will be awarded at 8:30pm that evening. Pádraig Ó Cuanacháin was a founding member of Gael-Taca in 1987 and he was also heavily involved in founding Irish primary schools in Cork City and County. Pádraig firmly believed that Irish should be seen by pupils outside the classroom and he encouraged businesses to make Irish visible. The language experienced a growth and development at that stage and Gael-Taca have been following Pádraigs example ever since. €15 entrance fee. Teastas & Dioplóma sa Ghaeilge in Ollscoil Luimnigh

The part-time Teastas & Dioplóma sa Ghaeilge offered by Aonad na Gaeilge, University of Limerick commences on 11th September 2013. Lectures and workshops take place every Wednesday evening 6.30-9.30pm on the UL campus. A weekend Gaeltacht workshop and guest lectures takes place each semester also. The course explores a range of topics related to the Irish language in contempory society. Language skills and competencies and the language and cultural awareness of students are developed gradually in the programme. The learning and support needs of the adult learners are catered for in the programme. The course would suit: • those who wish to complete a part-time course and gain a formal professional qualification in Irish • those interested in working in the Irish language sector • those who wish to develop and enhance their Irish language skills in their current job Applications from mature students are particularly welcome. Irish medium interviews for places on the programme will take place in late August.

Gealóga – Mayo’s bright young musicians

On Thursday June 13, Gealóga, a traditional music ensemble formed as part of the Music Generation Mayo – Music Residency Programme, performed for international delegates attending the Education Committee Meeting in Castletown House, Leixlip, a Department of Education and Skills event organised as part of Ireland’s EU presidency.
The group of 11 young talented traditional musicians, aged 12-18 years, was selected via an audition process in January 2013 and they have been progressing under the mentorship of their director, acclaimed Co Mayo musician and performer, Emer Mayock.
Nominated by the Mayo Music Education Partnership to represent their country on this international stage, Gealóga’s appearance marks the final event in Music Generation’s performance rogramme for the Department of Education and Skills EU presidency events.
Hailing from throughout Co Mayo, Gealóga, which translates as ‘bright youth’, comprises the following musicians: Kate Heneghan, Orla Mannion, Donal Parksinson (fiddle), Patrick Boyle (accordion), Marianna Tiernan (concertina), Ellen Murphy (harp), Alan Judge, Catherine Lambe, Grace McDonnell (flute), Niamh Mulhern (uilleann pipes) and Seán McGreal (bodhrán, whistle and voice). Over the past few months the ensemble has been meeting regularly to share and source material, collaborate as fellow musicians, examine the history of the ensemble in traditional music, while preparing and rehearsing for the performances which will mark the culmination of their residency programme in July 2013.
An exceptionally accomplished young ensemble, members of Gealóga have successfully competed and received top prizes in the Connacht and national Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competitions. They have graced many prestigious performance stages as individual musicians and in groups, having been taught and influenced in their musical development by the cream of Irish traditional musicians both in Co Mayo and neighbouring counties. “Each individual member is an accomplished musician in their own right,” noted ensemble director, Emer Mayock, “now as part of the ensemble they bring their own musical imagination and energy to create a dynamic and vibrant sound.” To celebrate Love Live Music – International Music Day, members of Gealóga undertook a whistle-stop tour of Mayo on Friday June 21 and are looking forward to their main performances at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, on Friday July 12 (booking 094 902 3733)and the Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday July 13 (booking 094 902 3733).

Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s GAA club is hosting a major weekend of Music and Literature at Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin this weekend.
The event starts with a big Cultural Concert this Thursday night, June 27 with doors opening at 9pm.
Eleanor Shanley along with Paul Kelly and Frankie Lane as well as Charlie McGettigan top the bill. Cavan’s famed Martin Donohoe and family bring some Irish traditional music and the Ulster Scots’ tradition will be represented by David Angus.
Then there is Edwina Guckian with some sean-nós dancing, lilter Séamus Fay from Cavan and John Shanley and Paul McCarthy on the pipes.
It is an exceptional evening of music and song and the admission is only €10 with full bar facilities.
The event is part of the Dialogues Through Literature weekend which is supported by the IFI (International Fund for Ireland). Dialogues through Literature is a cross community and cross border Readers Network. The project is engaging readers from across the Leitrim, Fermanagh border as well as counties Cavan and Tyrone. It offers readers the opportunity to meet together, hear authors read and to engage with speakers about literature.
On Friday morning, June 28 the Dialogues Through Literature Symposium starts at 10.30am with registration.
Speakers include Carlo Gébler, Darren McCann, Claire Kilroy, Jennifer Johnston and Susan McKay.
On the Saturday, June 29 speakers include DBC Pierre, Michael Harding, Martina Devlin, Rebecca O’Connor and Ted Sheehy. There is a discussion on the Irish Language with Gordon McCoy, Seosamh Mac Donnacha and Eilís Ní Dhuibhne as well as a seisiúin as Gaeilge with Eilís Ni Dhuibhne.
There is no charge to any of the Dialogues events on the Friday and Saturday and lunch is provided free as well.
