Background:

Naíonra an Teaghlaigh Naofa, was founded by Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naofa, and trades under the title “Coiste Naíonra an Teaghlaigh Naofa Teo.”  is a not-for-profit, Irish language pre-school. It has been in operation for more than 25 years, and is situated on the grounds of Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naofa, Tory Top Road, Ballyphehane, Cork city.

The Naionra operates during the academic year, from September to June incl.  There are two sessions per day 08.45-11.45 and 12.00-15.00 hrs. Student numbers fluctuate but there are currently 47 enrolled for Sept 2018.  There is a team of six part-time Early Years Educators.

Reporting to:

The Manager of the Naionra is employed by Coiste Naionra an Teaghlaigh Naofa Teo. and reports to the Naíonra Management Committee.

Duties & Responsibilities:

·         To take day to day responsibility for children and teaching team members, ensuring compliance with legislative and safety standards at all times.

·         Maintain and update the curriculum in line with Siolta and Aistear.

·         Be professional in all verbal and non-verbal interactions with employees, parents and children at all times.

·         To lead ECCE scheme provision for pre-schoolers.

·         To ensure high standards of care and education

·         To ensure a high standard of hygiene

·         Attend meetings and undertake training as required.

·         Revise and update policies and procedures as required.

·         Adhere to Child Protection Policy of the service and follow procedure to report any concerns.

·         Maintain all records as required by legislation, Pobal and Tusla.

·         To be responsible for the day-to-day financial operations within the Naíonra.  Operate the payroll software, maintain a budget and keep accurate accounts.  Work with the accountant to complete all financial statements required by Pobal, Tusla, CRO, Inland Revenue etc.

·         Represent the service during Inspections by Tusla, Pobal, DES, NERA and act on any recommendations made in subsequent reports.

·         Network with appropriate local, statutory and voluntary agencies.

·         Ensure the centre is adequately insured and that all safety equipment is maintained and regularly serviced.

·         To facilitate regular staff meetings.

·         To communicate effectively with parents.

·         To co-ordinate recruitment, appraisal and training requirements for all staff.

·         Maintain accurate and up to date personnel records for all employees.

·         Ensure policy documents relating to employee legislation are kept up to date and available to all Team Members.

·         Be able to take charge and direct children and teaching team members in the event of an emergency.

·         Maintain confidentiality.

·         To be a key holder for the Naionra and main gate of the school.

·         Maintain systems of observation and record keeping so that each child’s progress is effectively monitored and supported.

·         Support parents of children with special requirements.  Complete observational reports as requested by medical professionals through parents.

Person Specifications:

·         Minimum FETAC (QQI) Level 7 qualification in E.Y. Care & Education

·         Knowledge, understanding and practical experience of pre-school education (minimum two years).

·         Experience in a team lead role.

·         Good knowledge of spoken and written Irish

·         Proven organisational and computer skills.

·         Ability to work independently.

·         Kindness, warmth and responsiveness to the needs of children and their families.

·         Ability to communicate effectively.

·         Finance aptitude.

·         Complete Garda vetting

·         Commitment to equal opportunities for all children, families and staff.

·         Experience of observation and skill level assessment of young children.

Requirements:

·         FETAC (QQI) Level 7 qualification in Childcare or equivalent

·         Minimum experience – two years in a team lead role

·         Good knowledge of spoken and written Irish

·         Proven organisational and computer skills

Terms and Conditions:

·         This is a full time permanent position.

·         The salary for this role is €28,000 per annum.

Details

Dr Francesca La Morgia is seeking an energetic and engaged research assistant to work on a

study on communication abilities in secondary schools students attending immersion education

through Irish and Gaelic. The Research Assistant will be involved in creating experimental

materials and collecting the data for the project. He/she will have good knowledge of Gaelic and

Irish and a good understanding of the secondary school curriculum in Ireland and Scotland. A

personalized training plan in the psychology of language will be designed for the Research

Assistant. The RA will be based at Trinity College Dublin.

The project

“New speakers moving dialogues” is a project funded by Foras na Gaelige and Bòrd Na Gàidhlig

under the Colmcille Funding Scheme.The main aim of project is to investigate communication

skills in young adults speakers of Irish and Gaelic who have been educated through the medium

of these languages. The project focuses on spoken communication and on the use of new media

for promoting communication. The project is coordinated by Dr. Francesca La Morgia in

collaboration with Dr Maria Garraffa (Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh).

Key duties and responsibilities

Preparing test materials in Irish and Gaelic, contacting participants, testing secondary school

students, coding data, assisting with data analysis, maintaining equipment, organizing meetings,

and assisting with grant management. Conduct literature and database searches. Maintain written

records of research results and progress. Contribute to the production of research reports and

publications and other dissemination activities.

 

Essential qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in an area of Social Sciences, including Psychology, Linguistics,

Education, or similar.

Essential experience includes:

  • Participant recruitment and retention;
  • Study administration (scheduling appointments, managing data packs and data entry, etc.);
  • Ability to plan and organise a research study and prioritise workload effectively;
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail;
  • Good knowledge of both Irish and Gaelic.

Desirable qualifications:

Previous experience of testing adults;

Experience in dissemination activities including public engagement.

Travel

Travelling in Scotland and Ireland will be necessary for data collection.
