In the meantime, if you’re about town on Culture Night, Friday, 16 September 2016, call into Wood Quay Venue, Civic Offices, Dublin 8 from 5p.m. – 8p.m., where excerpts from the film Mise Éire will be shown, along with performances from the traditional music group, ‘Círéib’, winners of Siansa Gael Linn 2016.

Tobshlua 1916 is a bilingual dramatical representation of the cultural and linguistic
revolution in Ireland leading up to 1916 Easter Rising. Crammed with snippets and
sections of orations, songs and poetry based on the work of the Gaelic League from
that period, An Eilifint sa G.P.O. questions our Gaelic identity in the Ireland of today.
Only a small group of actors is required to stage this flashmob on the spot as it were
while drawing in the audience. Suitable for street performance at festivals, as a
precursor to plays or as soul lunch in schools, shopping centres and public buildings.
A joint venture by An Lab and Oifig Ghaeilge Chomhairle Contae Chiarraí.

On Saturday, December 3rd 2016, the Irish language will be officially celebrated through Féasta 100, one of the main closing events of the 1916 commemorative year. No one can deny the power of the Irish language in the penmanship and communication of many of the prominent Easter Rising figures. This celebratory event offers the Irish people a unique opportunity to formally acknowledge the status of an Ghaeilge and celebrate her significance at the heart of Ireland’s historical and cultural landscape.
The six lead Irish language organisations comprising of Conradh na Gaeilge; Cumann na bhFiann; Gael Linn; Gaelscoileanna Teo; Glór na nGael and Oireachtas na Gaeilge in partnership with Foras na Gaeilge have come together to celebrate the Irish language in this historical year of 2016. They are delighted to welcome the President of Ireland, Micheal D. Higgins as honorary guest. This gala dinner is also an occasion to support and provide a national platform for many Irish language artists, musicians and businesses who have been commissioned as part of this one-off centenary event.
Three of the artists who will perform at Féasta 100 have individually developed artistic projects for the 1916 calendar. Choreographer and dancer Fearghus Ó Conchúir from the Rinn Gaeltacht devised and produced The Casement Project, commissioned by the Arts Council with performances in both London and Dublin. Sean-nós singer Lorcán Mac Mathúna from Dublin was also commissioned by the Arts Council to compose and arrange a work of music inspired by the writings and ideals of the leaders of the Easter Rising. 1916: Visionaries and their Words has been performed in both Ireland and France. Harpist Síle Denvir from the Connemara Gaeltacht, recently released an album of music titled Caithréim: Ceol agus Amhráin ó Dhrámaí an Phiarsaigh a work of music inspired by the dramas of Pádraig Pearse.
Féasta 100 will be a significant and memorable event for those in attendance. A unique opportunity to pause and appreciate the Irish language in the utmost spirit of celebration and pride. It aspires to arouse a renewed sense of creativity, energy and growth as the Irish language moves forward into the next one hundred years.
Féasta 100 will take place in our capital city at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel, Upper Lesson Street, Dublin. The management and staff of the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel have enthusiastically welcomed Irish language training to provide service trí Ghaeilge on the night which will include menus and signage. Hosting 700 Irish speaking guests is a first for the Hotel and will undoubtedly have a positive impact upon the relevance of the Irish language in the service industry today.

Enrolment doubles at Irish medium school in Dungiven

Pupil numbers at an Irish medium school in the Roe Valley have more than doubled in two years.
Gaelcholáiste Dhoire in Dungiven is the North’s second post primary Irish Medium school. It is set in the historic Dungiven Castle, and opened last year with 16 pupils.
Principal Diarmaid Ua Bruadair said the development plan envisaged having 25 pupils in the second year. “The target was 15 in the first year and 25 in the second year,” Principal Ua Bruadair told the ‘Journal’. “This year we have 32 first year intakes, so we’ve increased pupil numbers from 16 to 48 in two years, and we are over the moon at that.”
Among new students starting school this term are eight from Derry city. “I think there is a hunger for Irish Medium education in Derry city and you can see that starting to blossom,” said Principal Ua Bruadair. “The students in Derry saw what was available here in Dungiven, and their parents came to the open days and they wanted what we have for their children and it was within striking distance.”
There are also new students from County Derry, including Slaughtneil and Ballinascreen, and one new student from Strabane. Principal Ua Bruadair believes the school will continue to grow due to the number of feeder Irish education schools locally, including Limavady.
He said supporting the 48 pupils are a six-strong teaching staff, working part-time and full-time. Gaelcholáiste Dhoire is involved with the Roe Valley Learning Community, a partnership involving Rossmar School, Limavady; St. Patrick’s College, Dungiven; Limavady Grammar School; St. Mary’s, Limavady, and Limavady High School.
