Siansa Gael Linn 2013
March 21, 2013
The grand finale of Siansa Gael Linn which will take place in the National Concert Hall in Dublin on Sunday, 14th April 2013.
Siansa Gael Linn is a competition aimed at young traditional music and singing groups organised and the competition has being going from strength to strength since it was first held in 2001.
On the night eight groups representing secondary schools in Co. Galway, Derry, Dublin Limerick Co. Waterford and Sligo will perform a 10-12 minute performance with emphasis on various elements of music i.e. rhythm, phrasing, notes, etc. to create imaginative links between the tunes/song.
The groups will be judged on their overall performance on the night, incorporating choice of music, arrangement, singing and ensemble playing. And this years judges include the Donegal fiddler, Ciarán Ó Maonaigh, founder of the group ‘Fidil’, the renowned box player and singer Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich from Baile na bPoc in West Kerry and who is a member of trad bands ‘Beginish’ and ‘Boys of the Lough’ they will be joined on the night with the highly respected whistle-player, Mary Bergin, who has worked with ‘Dé Danann’ and ‘Dordán’ over the years.
The young traditional music group Teaspach from Sligo were last year’s winners and they were amongst the performs who took the stage in January during this year’s Templebar Tradfest.
As they are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year, Gael Linn Gael Linn are delighted that President Michael D. Higgins will attend this year’s Siansa final. The concert will be broadcast live from the National Concert Hall on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta at 7.30p.m. and will be compered by the station’s popular presenter, Áine Hensey.
Siansa provides a platform for traditional groups who are aiming to develop their own tradi-tional style as did groups such as Dervish, Solas, Altan, Danú, Téada, etc.
A limited amount of tickets for the event are still available from the National Concert Hall on 01:4170000 or visit www.nch.ie

Registration now open for Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh
March 19, 2013
Registration for a new Gaelcholáiste, which will open in Dundrum in 2014, is now open.
A large crowd gathered in Leopardstown to hear the latest news on Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh.
An Foras Pátrúnachta is the patron of the new Gaelcholáiste. The school, which has a multidenominational ethos, will cater for the great demand for secondary school education through Irish in south Dublin.
Caoimhín Ó hEaghra, General Secretary of An Foras Pátrúnachta, said that An Foras Pátrúnachta and the Department of Education are currently working together to locate both a temporary site and a permanent site for the school.
Lorcán Mac Gabhann, chairperson of the founding committee, said that they are hopeful that the new school will be able to cater for the demand for education through Irish in the area.
The registration form as well as the admissions policy are available from the website www.gaelcholáiste.com
Educate Together school gets go-ahead after handover row
March 15, 2013
A MULTI-denominational, Educate Together school will open in Dublin’s south inner city in September, the Department of Education has confirmed.
The project has been controversial because of delays in the handover of buildings from an existing Catholic-run school in Basin Lane, James’s Street.
Negotiations suffered a setback when the Edmund Rice Schools Trust (ERST), which runs former Christian Brothers schools, raised legal obstacles to transferring the building.
The building involved is a CBS boys’ primary school, which Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin had previously agreed could merge with a local girls’ Catholic school to facilitate Educate Together.
But among the issues raised by ERST was that it was only permitted to sell off school buildings to “further the purpose of Catholic Education in the Edmund Rice tradition”.
Now, it appears the department has given the go ahead to Educate Together to make its arrangements. The first stage – the recruitment of a principal – will start immediately.
