IMMERSION EDUCATION – QUALITY EDUCATION

 

The Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin will speak at the reception at GAELSCOILEANNA TEO.’s Annual Education Conference on Friday the 17th November at 9.30am in the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth, Co. Kildare.

 

As well as the Minister, we are delighted that the Language Commissioner, Seán Ó Cuirreáin will officially open the Conference at 8pm of the same evening.

 

Among the guestspeakers over the two-day conference will be Dr. John Harris, author of the report: Irish in Primary Schools – Long Term National Trends in Achievement, who will discuss recent research findings. Over the two days experts and practioners will discuss important issues relating to Irish-medium education from pre-school onwards, but especially at primary and post-primary levels. Areas of discussion will include language and literarcy in Irish-medium primary schools; development and planning of schools; the immersion education system, as well as support services for Gaeltacht and Irish-medium second level schools.

 

According to Bláthnaid ní Ghréacháin, CEO of GAELSCOILEANNA TEO.,

"Immersion education is currently one of the main educational themes under discussion internationally. We are pleased to have this opportunity to discuss examples of best practice of Immersion education in Ireland, from theory to practice in an open forum. We are also looking forward to meeting with teachers, principals, parents, Irish-language and educational organisations over the two-day period and we extend a warm welcome to all who wish to attend."

 

The annual conference will end with the official closing of the conference and a light lunch on Saturday afternoon.

GAELSCOILEANNA TEO. is the co-ordinating body for schools that teach through Irish. It helps parents and local groups set up new schools and supports the established Irish-medium schools.
