Grant of €435,266 sanctioned for new community facility in An Cheathrú Rua

April 15, 2013

State Minister Dinny McGinley has sanctioned 80% of the cost for the renovation of an old factory in An Cheathrú Rua.

This allocation of €435,266 is being awarded to Comharchumann Mhic Dara to transform the old factory in order to serve the needs of the public and to provide accommodation for local summer colleges.

Minister McGinley said “This investment will strengthen the efforts both of the Comharchumann and of the local community to promote the Irish language in the area.”

The renovations will make 8 school rooms, 4 offices, a sports hall, toilets, and changing rooms available in one location.

Two Irish colleges, Coláiste Chiaráin and Coláiste Cholumba have been operating in An Cheathrú Rua for a number of years. Due to a lack of suitable space, both colleges depend heavily on local accommodation – between schools, community halls and offices in the area. This investment will be of a huge advantage and support to the continuous work of these colleges.

The investment will also be advantageous to language planning in the area in the way that a large Irish language family support unit will be built on the site as suggest in the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language.
