Celebrate a Celtic birthday with Fíbín

September 6, 2013

VERCINGETORIX HAS gone down in history as the Gaullish leader who in 52BC led the uprising against Julian Caesar’s conquest of his country.

Today he is revered as a proto-French patriot and there are memorials to him across France. However Vercingetorix will come alive in Connemara to narrate the history of the Celtic peoples.
Fíbín Theatre Company will bring a vast rock-face to life in Stair na gCeilteach/History of the Celts, a free outdoor videomapping spectacle on Friday September 13 and Saturday 14 at the Quarry, Furnace Road, Camus.
This action-packed story is told through the eyes of Vercingetorix, who is celebrating his 3,000th birthday. Stair na gCeilteach also marks Fíbín’s 10th birthday. The company is celebrated for its visual theatre which features masks, puppets, video projections, and shadow puppetry.
This is the company’s first sitespecific show and first time to use video-mapping, a state-of-the-art technology of mapping the contours of any surface and projecting moving images onto it. Stair na gCeilteach is directed by Rod Goodall and features music by the award-winning Galway choir Cois Cladaigh and soloist Sarah Grealish.
The show is a collaboration between Fíbín and video-mapping artists Improbable Films from Madrid and forms part of the programme for Culture Connects.
Tickets are free but must be reserved by contacting fibinteo@gmail.com or 091 – 593823. For more information see www.fibin.com

Planning decision due on Gaelscoil de hÍde next month

August 16, 2013

By the start of next month, Gaelscoil de hÍde in Oranmore, will know whether it has received planning permission for its new school.

The application follows a grant of outline planning permission and the purchase of the site by the Department of Education earlier this year. This current application is seeking approval for the construction of a twostorey school with 16 classrooms, a general purpose room, library, resource and other rooms.
A decision is due from the Galway County Council on September 3. Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish has welcomed the application, pointing out that the school has 292 pupils and 20 staff, all of whom are housed in temporary accommodation on a halfacre site, with no playground space, or other facilities. The annual rental cost of prefabs is €200,000.

There is still time to express your interest in Knocknacarra’s bilingual community national school

June 14, 2013

Due to the level of interest to date, the City of Galway VEC has extended the deadline for receiving expressions of interest for Galway’s first bilingual community national school in Knocknacarra.

Expressions of interest can be made at www.cgvec.ie/cns before 12 noon on June 14.
The proposed bilingual model delivers the Department of Education and Skills’ primary education curriculum through two languages, Irish and English, to enable progression to post primary education through the medium of either Irish or English, and welcomes children from all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
It is intended that children completing their primary education in the City of Galway VEC’s bilingual community national school will be competent to progress to Coláiste na Coiribe, City of Galway VEC’s coláiste lán-Ghaeilge in Knocknacarra, which recently topped The Sunday Times table for university progression in Connacht, should they wish to do so.
Community national schools deliver the Goodness Me! Goodness You! programme, a multibelief programme which caters for children of all beliefs and none. It forms part of the daily teaching and learning in the school and full information can be found at www.cgvec.ie/cns
If successful, the City of Galway VEC’s bilingual community national school will open in Knocknacarra in September 2014.
The City of Galway VEC has a proven track record in delivering first-class education through both Irish and English across Galway city for more than 80 years from second level to further education, music education to lifelong learning, in its schools and via its many programmes.
Register your interest at www.cgvec.ie/cns
You can also contact the City of Galway VEC on 091 549 400.
