1M people sign up to learn Irish on DuoLingo in just one year

September 14, 2015

Moderator of DuoLingo ‘AlexInIreland’, who contributed over 50% of the course to the website, posted to announce a milestone one million people had singed up to learn our national language.

Alex writes:

“Let’s try and put this into perspective, shall we? 1,000,000 people is equal to the capacity of over 12 Croke Parks… one sixth of the population of Ireland… and most impressively, seven times the number of native speaker”.

Over 90,000 people live through Irish every day in the country’s gaeltachts, but one million new learners is a strong indication that there is still great interest in our native tongue.

“Go raibh mile maith agat… thanks to every single one of you for learning the beautiful language of my country”.

Duolingo is a free language-learning platform and app along with a crowdsourced text translation platform and a language proficiency assessment center. Duolingo is ad-free and users are not charged for its services.
