Minister invites applications for patronage of three new primary schools to be established in September 2016

February 16, 2016

The Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, has today invited school patron bodies/prospective school patron bodies to apply for the patronage of three new primary schools due to be established in September 2016.

Today’s invitation follows on from the Minister’s announcement in 2015 when she indicated the necessity to open seven new primary schools in 2015 and 2016 in order to meet demographic demand. Of the seven new schools, four opened in September 2015 in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork; Pelletstown, Co. Dublin; Greystones, Co. Wicklow; and the Knocknacarra area of Galway City West.

The remaining three schools are due to open in September 2016 and will serve the following school planning areas:
Goatstown/Stillorgan,
Cabra/Phibsborough/Dublin 7
Drumcondra/Marino/Dublin 1

Inviting applications from interested patrons today, Minister O’Sullivan said, “Parental demand is one of the key considerations in deciding on the patronage of these three new primary schools.”

The schools will be established in line with the requirements and criteria originally published on the Department’s website. Applicants must confirm they will comply with each of the requirements and criteria in order for their application to be processed.

Strong possibility’ €3.9m school in Fermoy will be opened by Christmas

February 16, 2016

A community group in Fermoy, Co Cork, has said it is “relieved and delighted in equal measure” that there have been no objections to the planning permission for a new €3.9m school for the town.

The Gaelscoil de hÍde Action Group yesterday announced An Board Pleanála did not receive any observations from the public in the one-month grace period since Cork County Council gave the green light for the project, and they expect work to start on the new school next month.

The three-storey, 24-classroom gaelscoil on a two-hectare site in Duntahane will come following years of protest at the crowded conditions in the existing school on the main street in the centre of Fermoy.

“The prospect of our children being in their new school by Christmas of 2016 is still a strong possibility,” a statement from the Gaelscoil de hÍde Action Group read.

The group said the new facility would make a “life changing” difference to the pupils of the school.

“These new facilities will enable our students to thrive,” it said.

“And our teachers, who are already delivering an excellent standard of education on a daily basis, can plan and do their work without concerns about class size, safety and resources.

“The children will be able to exercise freely — remember a partial ban on running in the playground is imposed at the current school premises because of safety concerns.

“For the first time the toilet facilities will be appropriate, children won’t have to be educated in cramped attic space or portable buildings and road safety issues for children coming to and leaving school will be completely reduced.”

The group also thanked principal Sean MacGearailt and some local representatives for their work towards the new school.

Education Minister to cut first sod on £11m Coláiste sports development

February 11, 2016

Minister of Education John O’Dowd will be welcomed by an honour guard of students today when he arrives at Coláiste Feirste to turn the first sod on the £11 million expansion of sport and teaching facilities at the school.

Coláiste Feirste, which currently has in excess of 600 students, is the fastest growing Irish medium school in Ireland and continues year after year to produce outstanding results for its students.

The investment by the Department of Education is the latest in a series of critical investments which are set to make 2016 a decisive year for the burgeoning Gaeltacht Quarter on the Falls.

Announcing the investment during the September 2015 Gaeltacht Quarter Recall Conference held at the school, Minister O’Dowd said: “Education through the medium of Irish is at the heart of the development of the Gaeltacht Quarter.”

“Coláiste Feirste is a well-established school, which is growing from strength to strength in terms of the educational outcomes for its students. An investment of £11million will see a refurbishment and new facilities at the school.”

Chair of Coláiste Feirste, Seán Mitchell, said: “This is a milestone in the development of the college and of Irish medium education in the north, but first and foremost it is about the development of the students of Coláiste Feirste.

“This is not just a major capital investment, it is an investment in the potential of the 600 plus students currently attending the college and the thousands who will continue their educational journey in Coláiste Feirste in the coming years.

“The physical regeneration of Coláiste Feirste will match the excellent progress made by the school in recent years in terms of academic, sporting and cultural achievements. We will have an environment that is fit for purpose which matches the ambition of the school and wider community and which is another building block in the Gaeltacht Quarter which is set to make this area an exemplar across the island and across Europe in terms of community-led and community-centered regeneration.”

The building project which commenced on Monday is being undertaken by Woodvale Construction and will run for another two years.
