Gaelcholáiste na Mara gets permanent recognition from the Department of Education & Skills

June 6, 2013

GAELSCOILEANNA TEO. would like to congratulate Gaelcholáiste na Mara, Arklow, Co. Wicklow, which has been granted permanent recognition by the Department of Education and Skills. The announcement is a timely one for the school, founded in 2007, as this year will see the first cohort of students from Gaelcholáiste na Mara undertake their Leaving Certificate. We wish all the school’s students well, especially those sitting their Junior and Leaving Certificate exams at the moment. They’re sure to have a bright future ahead after their time spent in this supportive, vibrant school. More information on the school is available on www.gaelcholaistenamara.ie, where you’ll find a great blog on the wide range of activities the school has been involved with over the course of the year.

Names chosen for the new schools opening in 2013!

June 5, 2013

GAELSCOILEANNA TEO. would like to give a warm welcome to Gaelscoil na Giúise (Firhouse, Dublin 24), Gaelscoil Shliabh Rua (Stepaside, Dublin 18) agus Gaelscoil Mhic Aodha (Kildare Town), 3 new irish-medium primary schools due to open in September 2013. There was great excitement recently when the schools’ principals and parents chose names for them; ‘Gaelscoil na Giúise’ refers to the fir trees from which Firhouse, the school’s location, gets its name, ‘Sliabh Rua’ is a historical name for the nearby Three Rock Mountain and as Gaelscoil Mhic Aodha’s permanent location is to be in the old McGee Barracks, the school community decided to recognise the history of the site in the school’s name.

We wish these new schools the very best as they prepare to open their doors for the first time in September. An Foras Pátrúnachta will be patron of all three schools and they will be coeducational and mulitdenominational. Contact Clare on 01 8535193 or cspainneach@gaelscoileanna.ie for general information on new schools, and contact An Foras Pátrúnachta directly for information on enrolment. There are places available for September 2013!

A new gaelscoil for Sandymount/Ringsend in 2014 – Information Evening, June 5th 2013

May 30, 2013

The Department of Education and Skills has announced that a new primary school is to open in the Sandymount/Ringsend area in September 2014. A campaign is underway to have the new school designated as a gaelscoil; there is no Irish-medium primary school in the area, and there is huge demand for places in the Irish-medium schools in the surrounding areas. The new school’s prospective patron, AN FORAS PÁTRÚNACHTA, along with GAELSCOILEANNA TEO., the coordinating body for Irish-medium schools, has organised an information evening on June 5th in the Ringsend & Irishtown Community Centre at 7pm. The event is open to the public and will focus on the benefits of Irish-medium education for all children.

This is a great opportunity for the community to get involved and take ownership of what will be a wonderful resource for the area for generations of children to come and to create a vibrant, successful school that they can feel very proud of. We would be delighted to meet you should you be interested in getting involved in the campaign to have a new gaelscoil established in the area.

Further information on the public event is available from  Clare on 01 8535193 or clare@gaelscoileanna.ie.

Bilingual primary school for Knocknacarra

May 28, 2013

The City of Galway VEC is seeking expressions of interest from parents who would like their children to attend a Bilingual Community National School in Knocknacarra.

Education would be provided in this bilingual school through the medium of Irish or English to children beginning school in 2014.

The co-educational school would welcome children from the local region, and educate them through Irish or English in a child-centred and multi-faith manner.

It is intended that the educational model provided by the City of Galway VEC through a bilingual approach will ensure students will be sufficiently competent to progress to Coláiste na Coiribe, an Irish language secondary school under the patronage of The City of Galway VEC.

The Departments of Education and Skills has highlighted the need for a new primary school in Knocknacarra, and the City of Galway VEC hopes to establish a new school under their own patronage to meet this need.

Parents and guardians are welcome to declare their interest at www.cgvec.ie/cns, and an information evening will take place Tuesday, May 28 2013 in the Clybaun Hotel, Knocknacarra, Co. Galway. Parents will have until Monday 10 June 2013 to declare their interest.

Gaelscoil an Chuilinn opening attracts large crowd

May 21, 2013

Gaelscoil an Chuilinn was officially opened in West Dublin last Saturday, 18 May.

Gaelscoil an Chuilinn has been in existence in Tyrrelstown since September 2012, when they started out with 15 students. With popularity gained over the last year, they are looking forward to welcoming a full class of 32 junior infants to the school next September.

Sporting hero Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh was a special guest at the opening, and there were many other recognisable faces at the event, with local T.D.s Leo Varadkar, Joe Higgins and Patrick Nulty as well local councillors Michael O’Donovan and Kieran Dennison. Local T.D. Joan Burton spoke on behalf of the Government about the improvement and success achieved by the Gaelscoil to date, as well as the importance of a Gaelscoil to the area. There was a large local contingency at the launch also including members of the clergy, parents and the Board of Management.

Principal Fergus Ó Conghaile was delighted with the opening and the amount of people present; “There was a tremendous amount of people present, a big crowd of both well-known people and parents. I’m very happy with the growth of the Gaelscoil to date as well as the aid of the public in the area. I want to thank the priest and rector, who gave us a blessing and a warm welcome to the area. We’re looking onward to the growth of the school, as well as the opening of Naíonra an Chuilinn in September”.

With two people employed at Gaelscoil an Chuilinn to date, principal Fergus Ó Conghaile, as well as teacher Nóinín Ní Ghoill, the school is still registering new students for senior infants and first class for next year, though their junior infants class for next year has been filled.

“Heritage grows through learning” is the motto at Gaelscoil an Chuilinn, and without a doubt Irish heritage will grow more and more as the amount of students in the Gaelscoil grows.

More information on Gaelscoil and Chuilinn is available on gaelscoilanchuilinn@gmail.com or on 01-8262022.

As well as the new students coming to the school in September, Naíonra an Chuilinn pre-school will also be opening in the Gaelscoil. More information on this is available on naionraanchuilinn@gmail.com or 085-7266455.

New School Building For Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh

May 16, 2013

The Board of Management of Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh wishes to confirm that it has accepted a revised proposal from the Department of Education and Skills in relation to its proposed school building project.

The Department of Education and Skills has confirmed to the board that their revised proposal will involve the:

  • Relocation of Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh to a greenfield site in the Knocknacarra area. The Department is currently in the process of identifying a suitable site.
  • Progression of a 24 classroom new school building for Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh to architectural planning and construction on that site under the current 5 year capital building programme of the Department.
  • Continuation of Bishop Martin Drennan as Patron of the school.

The Department has also acknowledged the preference of the Board of Management that the new school site will also accommodate a Naíonra and have confirmed that they will endeavour to identify and acquire a site that can accommodate a Naíonra. The Board of Management are satisfied that this will be the case.

“In warmly welcoming this very positive development the Board of Management paid tribute to all those who supported the school in its campaign to secure appropriate accommodation over the last year, especially parents , staff, public representatives and the wider community of Knocknaccarra. The Board of Management now look forward to working in a spirit of cooperation and partnership with the Department of Education and Skills to progress the project as quickly as possible. The Board also said the development was timely in that it will bring clarity and certainty to parents, Patrons and the wider community in relation to the issue of additional school places in the Knocknacarra area at a time when the Department of Education and Skills have just commenced a public consultation process with regard to the patronage of a new school for the area”.

New post-primary schools to be established in 2015-2016

May 14, 2013

The Department of Education and Skills recently announced that 8 new post-primary schools are to be established in 2015-2016. These schools will be English-medium schools, according to the letter received by GAELSCOILEANNA TEO. from the Department, and the correspondence also states that “Irish-medium provision was decided and catered for in the first group of schools announced” (the schools due to open in 2013 and 2014; including 3 Irish-medium schools). GAELSCOILEANNA TEO. is seeking immediate clarification of this statement as it directly contradicts the democratic process, the basis for the Department’s new approach to founding schools based on parental demand.

The Department of Education will ask prospective patrons of the new schools (in the areas listed below) to declare that they are willing to establish an Aonad (Irish-medium unit) if there is a demand for one, and GAELSCOILEANNA TEO. has asked that the Department clarify what processes are in place to measure this demand, what requirements there are of patrons to actively offer Irish-medium provision and what supports the Department will provide to patrons who wish to establish an Aonad. Patrons have until June 28th to submit applications for the patronage of these new post-primary schools. GAELSCOILEANNA TEO. will continue to negotiate with the Department and with patrons to insure that the right to and demand for Irish-medium education is provided for in the process to establish new schools.

The Department’s press release is available to read here: http://education.ie/en/Press-Events/Press-Releases/2013-Press-Releases/PR13-05-10B.html
