RDS Primary Science Fair 2014
July 18, 2013
As the school year comes to an end, we’re looking forward to whats coming up next term. If you’ve ever thought about entering the RDS Primary Science Fair, now is the time to start thinking about it.
If you’ve been looking for a unique way to integrate science and maths in your classroom, the Fair provides an opportunity for 120 primary schools to showcase their class STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects, receive feedback from experts and learn from viewing other projects at a major exhibition, the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
The Fair runs from January 9 to 11, 2014 and is open to 4th, 5th, 6th class and Key Stage 2 classes. The Fair is not a competition, the emphasis is for students to learn how to work scientifically and develop inquiry based skills, by developing a project which seeks to pose and answer a question related to the curriculum.
Some of the questions explored at the 2013 Fair included:
- How does carrying a bag affect our back health?
- How can I make my snowman last longer?
- Which brand of battery lasts the longest in a simple circuit?
The call for expressions of interest will open in September 2013. To receive e-mail updates you can contact primarysciencefair@rds.ie; call 01 240 7990 or visit www.rds.ie/primarysciencefair.

Gaelchultúr achieves third-level status
July 17, 2013
Gaelchultúr is pleased to announce that we have achieved the status of third-level institution.
We have chosen the name Coláiste na hÉireann for the new institution. As Coláiste na hÉireann, we are about to launch our first course, a post-graduate diploma in translation (Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán). This programme, a level 9 NFQ course, will commence in late September this year and will run for three semesters. Third-level status was awarded to Gaelchultúr by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI).
The Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán programme is aimed at those who already have a good standard of Irish, but who wish to learn translation skills or to enhance the skills they already have. It is also ideal for those who work through Irish on a daily basis – teachers and journalists, for example – who wish to improve their standard of written Irish. The course will also benefit those who are interested in working as a translator, administrator or lawyer-linguist in one of the European institutions.
A blended learning approach will be used in the programme, featuring a combination of online study, live online classes, and lectures and tutorials in the classroom. Since a great deal of the course material will be available on our e-learning website, ranganna.com, we expect a high level of interest in the programme from all corners of the country.
For more information about the Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán programme, or to download the course brochure and application form, please visit http://gaelchultur.com/en/postgrad.aspx. You can also call (01) 484 5220 or write to eolas@gaelchultur.com.
