Intensive Irish Course for Post-Primary Teachers Working in Gaeltacht and Irish-Medium Schools

July 9, 2014

August 18-22nd, Coláiste de hÍde, Tallaght, Dublin 24

The course will focus on the kind of language used by teachers on a daily basis when engaging with pupils in the classroom and in the school environment, as well as with other teachers and with parents.

The communicative approach to teaching will be used in the classes. A strong emphasis will be placed on group and pair work, giving learners a chance to practise what they’ve been taught.

A specialised session focusing on the teachers’ main subjects (excluding languages) will be offered. Every effort will be made to cater for the second subject but this might not be possible in all cases.

Emphasis will be placed on the most important and useful aspects of Irish grammar, e.g. verb tenses, simple prepositions, prepositional pronouns, gender of nouns/cases, counting people and things, dates and ordinal numbers, and the imperative mood. Games and competitions will be used to make the learning process more enjoyable and effective.

The following material will be covered in the classes regarding Irish and Information Technology: – adapting a computer for Irish – setting up Microsoft Word for Irish – the spellchecker GaelSpell – web resources, e.g. online Irish dictionaries, databases, and journals – resources for young and adult learners

Gramadach gan Stró! and Gaeilge gan Stró! – Lower Intermediate Level will be used as textbooks throughout the course and accounts will be created on the e-learning site ranganna.com for the participants.
