Details

Dr Francesca La Morgia is seeking an energetic and engaged research assistant to work on a

study on communication abilities in secondary schools students attending immersion education

through Irish and Gaelic. The Research Assistant will be involved in creating experimental

materials and collecting the data for the project. He/she will have good knowledge of Gaelic and

Irish and a good understanding of the secondary school curriculum in Ireland and Scotland. A

personalized training plan in the psychology of language will be designed for the Research

Assistant. The RA will be based at Trinity College Dublin.

The project

“New speakers moving dialogues” is a project funded by Foras na Gaelige and Bòrd Na Gàidhlig

under the Colmcille Funding Scheme.The main aim of project is to investigate communication

skills in young adults speakers of Irish and Gaelic who have been educated through the medium

of these languages. The project focuses on spoken communication and on the use of new media

for promoting communication. The project is coordinated by Dr. Francesca La Morgia in

collaboration with Dr Maria Garraffa (Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh).

Key duties and responsibilities

Preparing test materials in Irish and Gaelic, contacting participants, testing secondary school

students, coding data, assisting with data analysis, maintaining equipment, organizing meetings,

and assisting with grant management. Conduct literature and database searches. Maintain written

records of research results and progress. Contribute to the production of research reports and

publications and other dissemination activities.

 

Essential qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in an area of Social Sciences, including Psychology, Linguistics,

Education, or similar.

Essential experience includes:

  • Participant recruitment and retention;
  • Study administration (scheduling appointments, managing data packs and data entry, etc.);
  • Ability to plan and organise a research study and prioritise workload effectively;
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail;
  • Good knowledge of both Irish and Gaelic.

Desirable qualifications:

Previous experience of testing adults;

Experience in dissemination activities including public engagement.

Travel

Travelling in Scotland and Ireland will be necessary for data collection.
