End of an era as Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge is dissolved
July 15, 2014
In January of this year Foras na Gaeilge announced the results of a rationalisation process within the Irish language voluntary sector in which six lead-organisations were selected under a new funding model which came into effect on 01 July 2014.
Based on the criteria set by Foras na Gaeilge during the application process Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge was not selected as a lead-organisation and as a result funding to An Chomhdháil ceased on 30 June 2014 at which point all six employees were made redundant.
At a meeting held last night, 14 July 2014, the Board of Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge took the decision to dissolve An Chomhdháil in accordance with Section V of its constitution. It was put on record at the meeting that the Board felt that due to the decision by Foras na Gaeilge to cease funding of the organisation, that there was no other option but to dissolve, with immediate effect, the organisation which was founded in 1943. The meeting praised the staff of Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, and praised the advocacy undertaken by An Chomhdháil on behalf of Irish language speakers for more than 70 years.
Speaking at the final meeting of the Board, President of Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, Deirbhile Nic Craith, extended her gratitude to the member organisations of An Chomhdháil for their support since 1943, especially during the recent rationalisation process. Nic Craith praised the work of An Chomhdháil as the central steering council of the Irish language movement and thanked the staff for their diligence and their loyalty, and wished them well in their future endeavours.

Invitation to Artists to Create for Clon Gaelscoil
July 8, 2014
Artists of any genre who are interested in being considered for a “Per Cent Art Project” at Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin, Cloch na gCoillte, Iarthair Chorcaí (Clonakilty), are invited to submit an expression of interest to the Bórd Bainistíochta before 25th July.
All expressions must be made via e-mail to iarratasai@gmail.com.
It is envisaged that the Board of Management will meet with those who email and relevant issues will be discussed at that stage, after which the interested artists will be invited to submit their proposals.
The “Per Cent for Art” scheme is a government initiative, first introduced in 1988, whereby 1% of the cost of any publicly funded capital, infrastructural and building development can be allocated to the commissioning of a work of art.
Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin is a completely new building which opened in August 2013.
Principal Ms. Carmel Nic Airt said:-
“West Cork and indeed the whole of Ireland is full of creative people in diverse disciplines. We welcome expressions of interest from Artists, Musicians, Writers, Film-makers, Dance Artists, Drama Practitioners, etc. to create something unique and relevant to our school, it’s history, function and place in the world.
This is an exciting project and we look forward to hearing from creators of art in all it’s guises over the coming few weeks”.

Postgraduate Diploma in Translation being offered by Gaelchultúr again
July 8, 2014
Coláiste na hÉireann/Gaelchultúr is pleased to announce that the Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán (Postgraduate Diploma in Translation), the first postgraduate programme being offered by Coláiste na hÉireann/Gaelchultúr (www.gaelchultur.com), will be accepting a second cohort of students from September of this year.
Gaelchultúr was awarded the status of third level college by the government body Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI, or HETAC as it was formerly called) in July of last year and the company chose Coláiste na hÉireann as a name for the new college.
The Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán commenced in September 2013 and eleven students are currently undertaking this first programme.
The Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán is a Level 9 NFQ course and it lasts three semesters. It’s aimed at those who already have a good standard of Irish, but who wish to learn translation skills or to enhance the skills they already have. It’s also ideal for those who work through Irish on a daily basis – teachers and journalists, for example – who wish to improve their standard of writing in the language. The course will also benefit those who are interested in working as a translator, administrator or lawyer-linguist in one of the EU institutions.
The classroom-based sessions are held on one Saturday a month in Coláiste na hÉireann/Gaelchultúr’s headquarters in Dublin city centre. A great deal of the course material is available on Gaelchultúr’s e-learning website, ranganna.com, and this gives students from all parts of Ireland the opportunity to undertake the programme (the first cohort, for example, includes students from Tory Island and the Kerry Gaeltacht).
Information sessions regarding the Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán will take place in Coláiste na hÉireann/Gaelchultúr, 11 Clare Street, Dublin 2 at the following times and dates:
6.00–7.00pm, Tuesday, 26 August 2014
12.00–1.00pm, Saturday, 30 August 2014
For more information about the Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán programme, or to download the course brochure and application form, please visit http://gaelchultur.com/postgrad.aspx. You can also call (01) 484 5220 or write to eolas@gaelchultur.com.
The deadline for applications for the upcoming course is Tuesday, 2 September 2014.
