Ground-breaking Initiative ‘Dissolving Boundaries’ in Schools

May 24, 2012

Over 3,000 pupils from schools across Ireland will connect with each other online to celebrate ‘Dissolving Boundaries Day’ today.

Using the latest technology, schools from north and south of the border will link up to discuss the work they have being doing as part of the University of Ulster’s ground-breaking Dissolving Boundaries initiative.

Funded by the Department of Education since 1999, the programme involves schools from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland forming and maintaining friendships through the use of ICT and face to face meetings.

As part of the day-long celebration students from four schools including Maghera Primary School ,Gaelscoil an Chaistil, Ballycastle, Cullybackey High School  and Parkhall Primary School, Antrim, will take part in a live video-conference link-up at the University of Ulster’s Coleraine campus.

They will connect with their partner schools – St Colmcille’s National School, Co Offaly, Gaelscoil Nas na Riogh, Co Kildare, Eureka Secondary School, Kells, Co Meath and St Mary’s School for Deaf Girls, Dublin – who will be based at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

Professor Roger Austin, Co-Director of the Dissolving Boundaries programme, University of Ulster, said: “During the live link-up pupils will discuss work that they have carried out during the year including the Olympics, Titanic, space travel and poetry. The topics chosen by the schools are rooted in the curriculum and are used to develop a wide range of ICT and communication skills.

“Throughout the year contact between the schools is based on frequent interaction via video-conference and in their own protected Virtual Learning Environment as well as a face to face meeting.

“We are delighted that we have students from the controlled, maintained and Irish-medium sectors showcasing their work this year – this is a reminder that ICT can cross all sorts of boundaries.”

Jane Smyth, Dissolving Boundaries Programme Manager, added: “Over 4000 pupils from 171 schools across the island of Ireland were involved in Dissolving Boundaries this year alone. “Since the initiative was launched in 1999, over 36,000 pupils have taken part in Dissolving Boundaries, making it one of the largest and most successful school links programme anywhere in the world.”

Sharon Lawlor, Department of Education, added: “I am very pleased to meet pupils and teachers who have been working together as part of the Dissolving Boundaries programme. Their enthusiasm and hard work is an inspiration to us all.”

Nationwide Irish language picnic day

May 24, 2012

Fun and games through the Irish language will take place across Ireland on May 27th as young Irish language speaking families meet for the national picnic day organised by Comhluadar.

Comhluadar is an organisation that supports parents who are raising their children through Irish.
The main picnic will be taking place in St.Enda’s Park, Rathfarnham, Dublin, although other picnics will be taking place in other counties throughout the country including, Derry, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Mayo and Limerick.

Nicole Ní Cheallaigh, Officer of National Events at Comhluadar says, ‘The Picnic Náisiúnta is a great opportunity for families to come together at an Irish event in a relaxed, fun manner. There has been great interest already from both our own members and from members of the public.”

A picnic has not been organised for every county, however, people are more than welcome to organise their own picnic and register it with Comhluadar.
Every registered picnic will receive a resource pack to ensure the picnic is included as one of the many picnics of National Picnic Day.

Everyone is welcome to attend the National Picnic, although it is aimed at families who intend to speak Irish to their children.
Comhluadar often organise such events to cater for parents who raise their children through Irish and wish to get in contact with other parents who do the same.
Comhluadar intend to organise National Picnic Day annually from now on.

More information about National Picnic Day can be found on www.comhluadar.ie

Coláiste Ráithín on East Coast FM

May 23, 2012

On Tuesday 22nd May 2012 after the 11o’clock news, The Morning Show with Declan Meehan, on East Coast FM, is revisiting the situation regarding Coláiste Ráithín’s accommodation.

Cairde Ráithín/Coláiste Ráithín Parent’s Association understands that Michael Lawlor, Chairman, Co. Wicklow VEC and also Coláiste Ráithín Board Member, will be on the show, together with Paul Moore, Spokesperson, Cairde Ráithín, to discuss recent developments concerning the re-location of the Coláiste into a new school building.  This interview follows on from a recent programme by Declan Meehan with Bray Town Councillor Mick Glynn (also a Coláiste Ráithín Board Member) and Paul Moore on Monday 30th of April last.   Councillor Glynn had then anticipated that there would be positive developments arising from a scheduled meeting between Wicklow VEC and the Department of Education and Skills two days later on the 2nd May.  This turned out not to be the case, as the Department turned down Wicklow VEC’s request to fund services and an access road into the old Bray Golf Club Site in order to enable Coláiste Ráithín to be located there.

Cairde Ráithín expect the discussion will refer to the recent correspondence between the Minister for Education and Bray Town Councillor John Brady and also the correspondence between the Minister’s Private Secretary with Coláiste Ráithín parent Art O’Laoghaire, both letters confirming this position in regard to the old Golf Club site.

You can listen to the show here: http://eastcoast.fm/onair/programmes/morningshow (the feature on Coláiste Ráithín is in part 2, after the news) and further information on the school’s campaign is available here.
