Fourth Green Flag Awarded To Swords School

June 24, 2014

The staff and pupils at Gaelscoil Bhrian Boroimhe in Swords were very excited to be raising their 4th Green flag last week, with local Councillor Darragh Butler (FF), representing the County Mayor at the ceremony.

Niamh Ní Ghrifín from the green schools committee told the County Leader about the hard work that went in to receiving their flag: “We were awarded this flag during a lovely celebration held by An Taisce in the Helix and are extremely proud of this achievement,” she said, happily. “We have held regular events such as ‘Bling your Bike’, daily travel surveys, ‘Design a Helmet’ events, art competitions, eco shoe competitions, ‘Golden Boot’ awards, road safety lessons, thematic walks to school, National Walk to School Week and much more.”

“Just last week, we participated in a national Cycle to School day,” she continued. “Over 100 children cycled to school with their parents and many more decided to walk. We would like to thank Sandra Pokrant, An Tasice’s Green schools travel education officer, for all her help during the last two years. A very special thanks has to go to the children’s parents and the staff of Gaelscoil Bhrian Boroimhe, who have helped run and participated in each of these events (no matter what the weather), as well as the County Council for all their support,” Niamh concluded.

Gaeltacht scholarships for Realt na Mara pupils

June 23, 2014

Sixteen lucky primary school pupils from Scoil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara have chosen Pobalcholáiste Chú Chulainn and Gaelcholáiste Chúchulainn as their respective secondary schools, which they will progress to in September this year.

The pupils have been enjoying a Tús Maith preparation programme which aims to make the transition between primary and secondary school an easy and enjoyable experience.

Last week Deirdre Uí Liatháin, Príomhoide of both schools together with Mícheál Ó Coillte, stiúrthóir of Gaelcholáiste Chú Chulainn joined Mr. Mc Caul Príomhoide of Scoil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara, Bn. Uí Chiaráin, Club na Gaeilge, sixth class teachers, Miss Mc Ateer and Mrs Callen and the sixth class graduates to Scoileanna Chú Chulainn at a coffee morning in Scoil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara to celebrate and commend a group of eight students from fifth and sixth class in Scoil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara who have won scholarships to the Gaeltacht.

The lucky recipients will spend one week in Coláiste Aoidh Mhic Bhricne in Teileann, Co Donegal at the beginning of July.

The school would like to thank sponsors Tomás Ó Searcaigh, Maria Doyle, Oliver Morgan, Marianne Butler and of course the school’s own Club na Gaeilge for their generosity.

This year Pobalcholáiste Chú Chulainn will open its doors to the inaugural group of first years, a momentous moment in local history.
