Great displays from Gaelscoil

Aibreán 8, 2014

The four Gaelscoil Liatroma teams which qualified from the Primary Schools Sports Hall Athletics Finals in Ballinamore to represent Leitrim in the All Ireland last Wednesday put up excellent performances.

Fifteen County winners contested the National Finals organised by Offaly Sports Partnership Co Ordinator Eamon Henry in the spacious AIT International Athletics Arena in Athlone.

The outstanding performance was that of the third and fourth class Girls team which finished an excellent third behind Donegal and Clare. The final position scoring in this event was Donegal 322, Clare 300, Leitrim 259, Meath 252, Laois 238, Louth 191, North Tipperary 189, Wexford 177, Roscommon 172, Offaly 170, Longford 156, Westmeath 130, Sligo 123, Galway 104 , Limerick 97.

In the third & fourth class boys event Leitrim shared fifth position with Louth.

The fifth and sixth class Girls event in Ballinamore Sportshall produced the closest result with Four Masters of Kinlough actually holding the lead until the second last of the twelve events. In this event the Leitrim winners, Gaelscoil Liatroma, finished eighth in Athlone.

In the fifth and sixth class boys event Leitrim took a fine sixth position as Clare and Donegal again dominated.

The performances of the Leitrim competitors vindicates the work of Leitrim Sports Partnership, Leitrim County Board AAI and the Athletic Clubs in promoting this event which attracted 20 schools and over a thousand competitors at County Level.

For Leitrim Sports Partnership leaders it is a just reward for the huge volume of preparatory work put into the competition and the purposeful involvement of so many children in good quality activity who would not otherwise have got involved in sport is a clear example of Sports Partnerships in conjunction with existing voluntary sportsbodies can make a real and lasting contribution to the fight against lack of adequate exercise by young people with it’s various consequences.

Do you want a Gaelscoil for the Ballinamore area?

Deireadh Fómhair 30, 2013

Moves are afoot to try to establish a Gaelscoil to serve the South East Leitrim/West Cavan area that would be based in Ballinamore.

A Gaelscoil in Ballinamore would, potentially, serve the Ballinamore, Aughnasheelin, Aughawillan, Corlough, Templeport, Drumreilly, Carrigallen, Aughavas, Cloone, Mohill, Fenagh and Kiltubrid areas.

At present there are two very successful Gaelscoileanna , in Carrick on Shannon and in Manorhamilton.

A public meeting will be held in the Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s GAA club on Thursday 7 November at 8pm to discuss the proposal. Parents of children from the above-mentioned areas who would be due to go to school in the next one to three years are especially asked to attend this meeting.

Anyone with an interest in the subject is welcome. The benefits of having a Gaelscoil will be outlined.

An Triail for Leaving Cert Students

Samhain 16, 2012

The popular Gaeltacht company Fíbín bring their nationwide tour for schools, particularly for Leaving Certificate Curriculum to the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo on November 15 & 16 at 10.30am and 1.30pm.

This year the award winning company brings you ‘An Triail’, but this is An Triail as you’ve never seen it before. Prepare for puppets, high entertainment and such engaging visuals that you’ll actually WANT to answer questions on it. Bringing a seemingly outdated plot into the context of our modern society, Fíbín seek to address issues highlighted by both teachers and students alike. Difficulties in relating to the characters as the drama unfolds, comprehending the confinements of 1950’s Ireland and seeing beyond the black and white nature of dialogue are all dealt with in this snappy Fibín production. Come and see for yourselves!

Directed by Brendan Murray, tickets for An Triail are available at the Hawk’s Well Theatre Box Office on 071 916 1518.
