Sligo Gaelscoil gets approval for extra teacher

Bealtaine 30, 2014

A Gaelscoil in Sligo which had been forced to turn away almost 30 children enrolled for junior infants after the Department of Education refused a request for an extra teacher has now been given the go-ahead for a second junior infants class in September.

The case of Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré was highlighted on RTÉ News two weeks ago, with parents complaining that their right to have their children educated through Irish was being denied.

The Department of Education said that there were enough spaces for the children in other schools in the town but parents said that this was not the case.

They also argued that since there was only one Gaelscoil in Sligo, they would have to travel to Leitrim or Donegal if they wanted their children to have an Irish-language education.

Now, however, the Department of Education has informed the Gaelscoil that it can appoint another teacher for the coming school year to accommodate the children whose parents want to enrol them there.
